How to play English Draughts

Take a moment with English Draughts before moving to another game. Capture or immobilise all opposing pieces under English draughts rules. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Local two players; an automatic draw follows 80 quiet non-promotion half-moves.

Keep the aim in sight

Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Capture or immobilise all opposing pieces under English draughts rules. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

Step by step

  1. Select a piece, then its legal diagonal destination.
  2. A capture must be taken when available.
  3. Continue a jump chain with the same piece; promotion ends that capture turn.
  4. Kings move and capture diagonally both ways.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. Use the control method described here for this activity. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

A useful example

An adjacent enemy with an empty square beyond it requires a jump rather than a quiet move. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Check the stated objective.

Watch out for this

These are English short-king rules, not international flying kings. Check the rule before repeating the action. Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention.
